Partner confirms male-only dinner at Kleiner Perkins

Klimek, USA TODAY)SAN FRANCISCO — The Ellen Pao case began its second day in court Wednesday with one of her former co-workers confirming several all-male events organized for partners at the firm.Pao is a former partner at Silicon Valley's premier venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers. She is suing the firm for $16 million in a gender-discrimination suit.She is now the interim CEO of Reddit, a popular microblogging site.The case is generating significant buzz in Silicon Valley over the lack of women, African Americans and Hispanics at tech firms.Chi-hua Chien, a junior and then senior partner and now an adviser at the firm, was the first witness called to testify.Chien confirmed that in 2011 he organized an all-male dinner for Kleiner Perkins partners and companies the firm had worked with at the San Francisco condo of Al Gore, a partner at the firm.This dinner was one of the instances cited in Pao's complaint and given as an example of the culture of the firm.In it, Pao quoted Chien as saying in a meeting that having women present at the dinner would "kill the buzz."Kleiner Perkins had denied in court papers that the meeting was specifically organized to exclude women.Chien also confirmed that he had organized a ski trip to Vail, Colo., for a group of the firm's partners and staff at companies they worked with.The group rented three condos and the issue of how rooms would be allocated to men and women came up as it was deemed inappropriate for women to be asked to share rooms with men.Chien and colleagues discussed inviting Jennifer Hyman and, later, Jennifer Fleiss, co-founders of RentTheRunway.com, a Kleiner-funded firm.Instead, Chien said in an e-mail, "Why don't we punt on her and find two guys who are awesome? We can add four to eight women next year."Therese Lawless, Pao's lawyer, confirmed that there was no ski trip the subsequent year.Lawless spent close to an hour quizzing Chien about his performance at the company.Chien confirmed that he had worked three or four times with Bill Campbell in a group setting with other partners. Cambell has has coached many high-level executives in Silicon Valley.That's important because in opening remarks on Tuesday, Kleiner Perkins lawyer Lynne Hermle noted the firm had given Pao the chance to work with Campbell. The intimation was that she needed remedial training on how to deal with others.Lawless was making the point that multiple staffers at Kleiner Perkins had had similar training.Lawless also noted Chien received multiple somewhat negative reviews during his time at the firm. He was variously described as "brash and not open to other people's views," "too direct and harsh," "can come across as too arrogant" and "can be a little blunt or overbearing."This was in contrast to Tuesday's opening remarks, in which Hermle noted negative reviews of Pao during her tenure at the company, reflecting she was a poor fit for the job.Under cross-examination by Hermle, Chien said that being tough is a crucial trait for a venture capitalist."If a company is not doing well, you might have to fire the CEO. More than 2.2 million chose a new plan and just under 2 million were automatically re-enrolled."This shows that marketplace enrollees shopped more actively than expected," says Larry Levitt, senior vice president at the Kaiser Family Foundations. "People generally go on auto pilot when it comes to insurance, but many marketplace enrollees did shop around and in some cases changed plans."Of the 8.8 million, 53% were new consumers and 47% – about 4.2 million – were re-enrollments.Burwell also urged consumers who now have health insurance to use an HHS tool designed to help them to find a primary care doctor and otherwise access preventive health care."Millions of Americans are not using the care they can get through the Affordable Care Act," Burwell said.The Obama administration is increasingly taking its message to social media.This latest announcement came during a Google Hangout. Last week, the administration staged a video at the White House with Burwell and President Obama to announce the latest enrollment numbers.And the news developments have been coming at a rapid clip.On Tuesday, the Treasury Department announced people who have already filed their taxes using one of the erroneous health insurance forms sent by the federal government will not be required to file an amended return or owe additional taxes.About 800,000 consumers who have health insurance purchased on the federal exchange were contacted beginning late last week because the 1095-A tax form sent by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services contained a mistake in the benchmark plan used to calculate how much tax they owe,The CMS urged people to hold off on filing their taxes until they get new corrected forms. The IRS estimated that 50,000 people had already filed. The Treasury Department said those people can refile to get the additional money they were owed.Last week, the CMS urged those who hadn't filed to wait until they got the new form, expected in early March.Millions of consumers who live in the 37 states that use Healthcare.gov, haven't filed their 2014 taxes and owe a penalty for not having health insurance were given an extension. They can sign up from March 15 to April 30.At least eight states running their own exchanges have announced tax-time special enrollment periods for residents facing penalties. On Wednesday, Maryland joined California, Connecticut, Kentucky, Minnesota, New York, Vermont and Washington.States running their own exchanges are also releasing recent enrollment numbers encompassing the regular sign-up period. Kentucky officials, for example, said 102,830 residents enrolled or re-enrolled in a qualified health plan through the state exchange from Nov. 15 to Feb. 20. Maryland's exchange, meanwhile, enrolled 119,096 people in private plans during the regular enrollment period.Many of the enrollment periods differ. Kentucky's runs from March 2-April 30; Minnesota's and New York's from March 1-April 30; California's from Feb. 23-April 30; Vermont's from Feb. 16-May 31; Maryland's March 15-April 30; and Washington's from Feb. 17-April 17. Connecticut officials have said they will have a month-long special enrollment but have not yet announced state and end dates."We are thrilled this is an option for consumers applying through HealthCare.gov…This will be a great motivator for people," said Cathy Kaufmann, enrollment program director for Families USA. "We're glad that a handful of states quickly followed suit, and we're hoping that more will."Results of a Gallup poll released earlier this week show that the uninsured rate among U.S. adults dropped from 17.3% in 2013 to 13.8% in 2014, the lowest rate in the seven years the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index has measured it.No state reported a statistically-significant increase in the uninsured, and some saw very sharp drops. Children on the bus were shaken up but not injured.The collisions began at about 7:30 a.m. ET in heavy snow falling near Etna, Maine, about 30 miles west of Bangor. The main crash involved more than two dozen vehicles, and a series of other wrecks — some with two or three vehicles and others in which vehicles slid off the road to avoid collisions — led up to the crash site, troopers said.A state police spokesman said 50 vehicles were towed away and an additional 25 were damaged.Rhonda Kent, an occupational therapist from St. Albans, Maine, said her car was sideswiped amid the pileup, which sent cars and trucks spinning. Southwest maintenance glitch shows complexity of inspections

A Southwest Airlines Boeing 737-700 takes off from the Tampa International Airport on May 15, 2014.(Photo: Chris O'Meara, AP)Southwest Airlines canceled about 100 flights Tuesday and Wednesday after the airline realized some planes hadn't received routine inspections, but safety experts said the rudder system at stake would be used only if several other pieces of equipment had failed first.Southwest briefly grounded 128 of its Boeing 737-700 aircraft after discovering that maintenance checks hadn't been conducted on a backup hydraulic system for the rudder, which helps steer the plane.But the need for the backup rudder system is rare, said Chuck Horning, chairman of aviation maintenance science at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Fla. The plane's ailerons and elevators, which are horizontal panels on the wings and tail that direct the plane, and the rudder are each powered by a pair of hydraulic systems, each of which have both an engine pump and an electric pump."It would take a complete failure of both of those hydraulic systems before the standby system would be needed," said Horning, who worked for 18 years as an airline maintenance technician.But the inspections are important precisely because the backup rudder system is used so infrequently. While the aileron and elevator can be powered manually if necessary, the rudder can't be, Horning said."The time to find it doesn't work is not when you need it," Horning said.The episode illustrated the difficulties tracking inspections and conducting maintenance on complex modern aircraft. Airlines typically track their maintenance by computer, but programming glitches or human errors updating the schedule could lead to missed inspections.Southwest voluntarily grounded the planes that needed inspections. But after working with the Federal Aviation Administration, which regulates aircraft maintenance, and manufacturer Boeing, Southwest returned the planes to service while the inspections are caught up over five days.Brandy King, a Southwest spokeswoman, said the airline discovered it inadvertently missed one of three maintenance checks for the planes that are based on how many hours each plane is flown. The discovery came while the airline was updating its maintenance tracking system for its FAA-approved program, she said."This is a periodic inspection of a backup system," the FAA said. "The FAA evaluated the risk and agreed that the airline could continue to operate the planes during the short interim."While the FAA negotiates with airlines over minor maintenance problems, the agency can also levy fines up to $27,500 per violation against airlines that don't follow the rules.The FAA settled a case with Southwest in 2009 for $7.5 million for failing to inspect dozens of planes for cracks in the fuselage of planes.But the FAA also sued Southwest in November for $12 million because its contractor, Aviation Technical Services, allegedly didn't follow federal rules in maintaining the fasteners and shoring that kept the metal skin on the fuselage of 44 planes.Southwest denied the allegations in January and asked for a jury trial in U.S. District Court in Seattle.Will ice, snow shut down the South...again?Feb 25, 2015

Ex-Perak forestry officer charged with graft, fined RM70,000 – Bernama

A former Hulu Perak forestry department officer was fined RM70,000 in default seven months' jail by the Sessions Court in Ipoh today after he pleaded guilty of accepting RM100,000 bribe from a timber contractor three years ago.Judge Rihaida Rafie also ordered the RM768,970 found during a raid on Amir Sharifuddin Aliman's house along with the money totalling about RM3 million in 12 accounts belonging to his wife and their four children to be returned to the government.The judge made the decision after Amir changed his plea to guilty when the case was brought up for mention today.Amir, 61, admitted to have accepted the bribe from Ismail Abdul Manas in front of eatery Kafe Bawang Merah in Gerik on January 3, 2012, in his capacity as a public officer.On February 1, 2013, he claimed trial to 12 counts of accepting bribe of RM390,000 from two timber contractors between April 2010 and January 2012.On September 26, Amir was also charged with failing to hand over a sworn declaration to explain his extraordinary wealth. With his guilty plea, the prosecution withdrew the remaining 13 charges against him.In mitigation, Amir's counsel, Saw Hoe Teck, asked the court to reduce the fine on grounds that his client was suffering from bipolar affective disorder and was still under treatment."My client and his wife are not working. The money in their accounts has been stripped out. Please consider a lower fine," he said. – Bernama, February 25, 2015.

           หอยลายกระป๋อง
          ใบมะกรูดฉีก

          พริกไทยอ่อน
          แป้งสาลีอเนกประสงค์
          น้ำมันพืชสำหรับทอด
          พริกขี้หนูแห้ง
          เกลือป่น

วิธีทำ

          Step 1 : เตรียมผักและสมุนไพร โดยซอยตะไคร้ หอมแดง กระเทียม และกระชายเป็นแว่นบาง ๆ จากนั้นหั่นครึ่งพริกไทยอ่อน เตรียมไว้




          Step 2 : เคล้าผสมผักสมุนไพรที่เตรียมไว้ทั้งหมดกับแป้งสาลีอเนกประสงค์ให้เข้ากัน ให้แป้งกระจายติดสมุนไพรให้ทั่ว (แป้งสาลีฯ จะช่วยให้สมุนไรพกรอบ)

          Step 3 : ทอดสมุนไพร โดยใส่น้ำมันพืชลงในกระทะ นำขึ้นตั้งไฟพอร้อนใส่สมุนไพรที่คลุกแป้งไว้ลงไปทอดจนเหลืองและกรอบ ตักขึ้นสะเด็ดน้ำมัน เตรียมไว้




          Step 4 : ใส่สมุนไพรที่สะเด็ดน้ำมันแล้งลงในอ่างผสม ตามด้วยหอยลายกระป๋อง เติมเกลือป่นลงไปเล็กน้อย จากนั้นเคล้าผสมให้เข้ากัน เติมพริกแห้งลงไปผสมให้เข้ากันอีกครั้ง




          Step 5 : ตักส่วนผสมหอยลายคั่วสมุนไพรใส่จาน แต่งให้สวยงาม พร้อมเสิร์ฟ

ส่วนผสม
          ถั่วลิสงคั่ว 1/4 ถ้วย

          น้ำพริกแกงเผ็ด 1/4 ถ้วย

          น้ำพริกแกงใต้ 1 ช้อนโต๊ะ

          เต้าหู้หลอด 1/2 ถ้วย (ประมาณ 2 ขีด)

          กุ้งสดสับละเอียด 1 ขีด

          น้ำปลา 3 ช้อนชา

          เกลือ 1/2 ช้อนชา

          น้ำเต้าหู้ 1/4 ถ้วย

          กระชายซอยเป็นเส้นยาว 2 ช้อนโต๊ะ

          ใบยอหั่นหยาบ ใบโหระพา และใบแมงลัก ปริมาณตามชอบ

          กุ้งสดแกะเปลือก 4-5 ตัว

          ใบมะกรูดหั่นซอยละเอียด ปริมาณตามชอบ

          พริกชี้ฟ้าสีเหลืองและแดงหั่นเป็นเส้นยาว ปริมาณตามชอบ

          น้ำเต้าหู้ผสมเกลือเล็กน้อย

วิธีทำ




          1. โขลกถั่วลิสงพอหยาบ ใส่น้ำพริกแกงเผ็ดและน้ำพริกแกงใต้ลงไป โขลกต่อจนส่วนผสมเป็นเนื้อเดียวกัน




          2. บดเต้าหู้หลอดให้ละเอียด ใส่น้ำพริกแกงที่โขลกไว้แล้วลงไป คนให้เข้ากัน ตามด้วยกุ้งสับละเอียด แล้วปรุงรสด้วยน้ำปลาและเกลือ




          3. ค่อย ๆ เทน้ำเต้าหู้ลงไปทีละนิด คนไปในทิศทางเดียวกันจนส่วนผสมเริ่มหนืด ใส่กระชายลงไป คนต่ออีกสักครู่ พักไว้




          4. นึ่งใบยอ ใบโหระพา และใบแมงลักจนสุกได้ที่




          5. ใส่ผักที่นึ่งแล้วลงในกระทงใบตอง ตักส่วนผสมในข้อ 3 ราดลงบนผักจนเกือบเต็มกระทง วางกุ้งสด โรยใบมะกรูด และพริกชี้ฟ้าเหลือง-แดง แล้วนำไปนึ่งประมาณ 10-15 นาทีจนสุก




          6. เคี่ยวน้ำเต้าหู้ผสมเกลือจนข้นแล้วนำไปราดลงบนห่อหมกที่นึ่งสุกแล้ว

เคล็ดลับ:

          1. ไม่ควรคนห่อหมกไปทางขวาทีทางซ้ายที เพราะจะทำให้น้ำในส่วนผสมซึมออกมา เวลานิ่งเนื้อห่อหมกจะไม่เหนียว กินไม่อร่อย

          2. หากคนพริกแกงแล้วรู้สึกว่าไม่หอม สามารถเติมกะปิลงไปได้ จะช่วยให้กลิ่นหอมมากขึ้น

          ใครจะไปเชื่อว่า รูปห่อหมกที่เราเห็นอยู่ตรงหน้าจะเป็นห่อหมกสูตรเพื่อสุขภาพ ไม่ใช้กะทิเลยสักนิด นอกจากจะมีประโยชน์แล้วยังน่ากินมาก ๆ เลยนะเนี่ย ลองทำกันเลยดีกว่าค่า
